Due to the impact of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA have decided to not allow the Russian federation or any of the teams in the club football representing the territory of Russia to participate in any of the FIFA or UEFA competitions until further notice. The sanction has come out as a result of the cruel measures being taken for the war by the Russian federation an is a message from the World's and Europe's governing bodies that Football is United! The FIFA world cup is the highest level of the game of football. It has been held every 4 years since its inception in 1930 (expect 1942 & 1946 due to the second World War). The tournament has seen an expansion from 13 teams to the current version which has 32 and is expected to have that number increased to 48 in the 2026 version.  Current Format As per Wikipedia, "The current format involves a qualification phase, which takes place over the preceding three years, to determine which teams qualify for the tournament phase.
